Dr. Duane is Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Emergency General Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University. She serves as Director of Infection Control for the Surgical Trauma ICU as well as Chair of the VCU Health Systems Infection Control Committee.



She is former chair of the Women in Science, Dentistry and Medicine Professional development series bringing timely topics to all faculty on campus for discussion and education. She is past-President of L.D. Britt Surgical Society and the Virginia Chapter of the Association of Women Surgeons and in that capacity was the AWS representative to the American College of Surgeons Virginia Chapter.

Dr. Duane is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and recipient of many grants including the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma scholarship for wound care research. Her research focus is clinical outcomes for which she has presented and published on topics ranging from protocol utilization in the ICU to minimize infectious complications to appropriate clinical evaluations and radiograph usage in the evaluation of trauma patients for safer, cost effective patient care.



Dr. Duane has received a number of teaching awards from the medical students at VCU including Best Teacher of the year for the 2005- 2006 surgical clerkship. She is actively involved in her church volunteer activities as well. Dr. Duane received her Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York at Buffalo and her undergraduate degree from Cornell University.

In her spare time she enjoys reading, exercising, participating in triathlons and spending time with her husband, Jeffrey and their four young children, Luke, John, Xavier and Lila.
