Robert, "Bob" Maxwell was born at Norfolk General Hospital in August of 1966. He attended Bayside High School, followed by the College of William and Mary and the Medical College of Virginia. He entered the surgical residency program at Eastern Virginia Medical School in 1992 where he was trained and mentored under Dr. Britt.
Strongly influenced by this experience with Dr. Britt, Dr. Maxwell completed a two year trauma/critical care fellowship at the Presley Regional Trauma Center in Memphis, Ten. Now an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, Dr. Maxwell has received the Resident’s Award for Outstanding Teaching and is the program director of the surgical critical care fellowship.
He has several basic science publications using a large animal model to study pulmonary contusion and traumatic brain injury. Clinical research has led to publications on abdominal compartment syndrome, deep venous thrombosis, respiratory failure and adrenal insufficiency following trauma as well as several book chapters and review articles.
Dr. Maxwell is also an ad hoc editor for the Journal of Trauma and was recently elected to The Southern Surgical Association.
Dr. Maxwell is married to Kelly Lambert Maxwell of Virginia Beach and has one child, Erin Bailey Maxwell, who is six years old.
