Message from Dr. L.D. Britt

Dear Members:

It’s been said that a humble surgeon is an oxymoron.  Perhaps, I defy such an adage, for I do feel at times a little awkward knowing there’s a surgical society in my name.

However, my great joy is seeing so many accomplished surgeons who’ve received their core surgical training at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

The pride I feel is indescribable.  As I continue to say both nationally and internationally, an EVMS-trained surgeon has clinical acumen and surgical expertise unparalleled. In addition, his/her investigative ability and leadership skills make the EVMS-trained surgeon a standout in any arena.

I cannot imagine any group or organization that has made me more proud. Congratulations on a job well done.

Regards,

L.D. Britt, MD, MPH, D.Sc (Hon), FACS, FCCM, FRCSEng (Hon), FRCSEd (Hon), FWACS (Hon), FRCSI (Hon), FCS(SA) (Hon)

Mission Statement

The L.D. Britt Surgical Society was created to honor the principles that this great man displays. For those of us who have been privileged to work with Dr. Britt, we have learned from a true gentleman and scholar. Dr. Britt was born in Suffolk, Virginia, one of three boys. His mother, a teacher, instilled in him a devotion to education, and this influence has guided him throughout his life. He has won numerous teaching awards based on his tireless efforts to instruct students at all levels from the chief residents to the college students interested in a surgical career. His generous spirit extends beyond the academic arena into all aspects of society with his philanthropic endeavors. He supports many scholarships that have allowed dozens of aspiring students to attend college who otherwise would not have had such opportunities. His magnanimous spirit is infectious. By his example, those of us who trained with him have gone on to positions in which we are the educators and the leaders in all aspects of the surgical field. For all of these reasons, the L. D. Britt Surgical Society was created to honor the generosity, the commitment to education, and the discipline of our mentor.

The mission of the L.D. Britt Surgical Society is to engender comradery between past and present surgical residents of Eastern Virginia Medical School who've benefited from Dr. Britt’s generosity and commitment to the teaching of the surgical art. Since its inception we've developed a network of alumni to foster "intellectual exchange" and nurture young surgeons in their new careers.

Mission of our Web Site

This Web site has been developed to improve communication between previous graduates and current residents. In order to meet the goals of the Society, this Web site is designed to allow members to update their contact information as well as to convey ideas for the Society to the executive council. The Society also sponsors an annual dinner at the October meeting of the American College of Surgeons to allow past and present residents an opportunity to socialize and network. Furthermore, a scholarship has been established to honor a surgical resident that demonstrates a passion for teaching and mentoring as exemplified by Dr. Britt. Your generous support and active involvement can allow our goals to come to fruition.
